Summary

Operates electromechanical respiration equipment used to test and obtain data relative to the functioning of patient’s respiratory process for use by physician in diagnosing and treating pulmonary disorders.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties

1. Performs basic cardiopulmonary function tests including simple spirometry, flow volumeloop, lung volume testing by body plethysmography or helium dilution, lungdiffusion testing, maximal voluntary ventilation, electrocardiogram, and pulse oximetry.

2. Performs blood analysis tests to measure such factors as oxygen and carbon dioxide tensions, hemoglobin saturation and levels, and PH blood, using blood gas analyser.

3. Performs advanced cardiopulmonary testing including cardiopulmonary exercise testing, oxygen requirements, bronchial provocation testing, exercised induced bronchospasm testing, sleep disorders screening, and bi-level positive airway pressure titration.

4. Calibrates equipment daily and performs periodic control measurements to confirm measurement system accuracy. Performs user maintenance of all equipment; ensures thatequipment is operating properly and informs supervisor if special maintenance or repair is needed. Checks crash cart and test defibrillator daily.

5. Provides routine respiratory care and provides education to patients and families.Instructs regarding general therapeutic modalities including oxygen and aerosol delivery, metered dose administration, and bronchial hygiene.

6. Demonstrates breathing techniques and instructs patients regarding breathing techniques during testing.

7. Enters test data in medical records. Prepares testing reports and submits for interpretation.

8. Reviews final test reports for accuracy prior to distribution and documents all gasparameters.

9. Maintains records of equipment calibrations, control measurements, maintenance, and repairs as necessary.

10. Follows allHospital related policies and procedures.

11. Participates in self and others’ education, training, and development, as applicable.

 

Education

Bachelor’s or Associate Degree/Diploma (North American) in Respiratory Therapy or Cardiopulmonary Technology is required.

Experience Required

Grade 08:

Two (2) years of related experience with Bachelor’s or four (4) years with Associate Degree/Diploma is required.

Grade 09:

Four (4) years of experience as a Pulmonary Function Technologist at KFSH&RC.

Average of annual performance appraisal at least (3.5) for the last four (4) years

Fifty (50) hours of cumulative continued medical education [CME].

Other Requirements(Certificates)

*Respiratory Therapy Registry (RRT) from NBRC or CSRT required for North American graduates.

*Current Registration from country of origin and Saudi Commission for Health Specialties (SCHS) isrequired.

*Registered Pulmonary Function Technologist (CPFT or RPFT) is preferred.

*Basic Life Support (BLS) is required.

*Bilingual Arabic/English is preferred
