Summary
Provides safety inspections, training, emergency response and works together with staff to develop a comprehensive laboratory safety program.
Essential Responsibilities and Duties
1. Works with staff to integrate safety into research laboratory operations and promotes safe work practices based on regulatory requirements, best management practice guidance and Safety Policy.
2. Conducts safety inspections, compliance reviews and hazard assessments of research laboratories, animal facilities and other support facilities.
3. Maintains records of laboratory inspections, correspondence and investigations. Monitors completion of required safety actions and follow up on lab permit/registration renewals in a timely manner.
4. Assists in presenting and conducting Lab Safety training including biological, chemical, general, and physical protection in laboratories, proper hazardous materials storage and disposal, and other customized trainings.
5. Assists in preparing policies, guidelines, and procedures for biological, chemical, and physical hazards and processes.
6. Assists in the safety response of laboratory-related accidents or exposures, using appropriate spill kits, report incident/accidents, investigate, conduct root-cause analysis and implement corrective and preventive measures.
7. Prepares and provides annual safety reports, assists in and monitors corrective actions, as necessary.
8. Maintains strong collaborative and professional relationships with investigators, researchers, technical staff and environmental services while actively promoting a culture of safety.
9. Maintains working knowledge in standard safety guidelines and anticipates trends in laboratory safety and environmental health and evaluates their impact; communicates requirements to management.
10. Administrative tasks: keep records of daily activities, monitor safety in workplace and maintain reference materials.
Education
Master’s or Bachelor’s Degree in occupational Health, chemistry, industrial hygiene, laboratory safety, or other related discipline.
Experience Required
Four (4) years of related experience with Master’s or six (6) years of related experience with Bachelor’s Degree is required
Other Requirements(Certificates)
Certified Safety Professional, Registered Biosafety Professional, or CertifiedIndustrial Hygienist is required.
